As our country emerges from pandemic isolation, community space—especially outdoor spaces—will play an important role in returning us to a socially connected way of life. People with a stronger sense of belonging and social connectedness tend to live healthier, happier lives and are more vested in participating and improving their communities.  Belonging and Civic Muscle is one of the Seven Vital Conditions for Health and Well-Being and safe, open public spaces support and facilitate the human connection needed for this vital condition to thrive.

The IP3 team that stewards Community Commons works with organizations and thought leaders across the country to connect those driving change to the best tools, resources, data, and stories to support the work. These are eight of the best tools we’ve seen to help communities build and improve public spaces that promote belonging for all.
