Not all workers get paid when they are out sick. Only 13 states and DC have laws requiring paid sick leave. So many workers do not get paid when they are out of work sick or caring for a sick family member. Paid sick leave laws could be put in place by the federal government or in more states and cities. Congress provided temporary paid sick leave to some employees in response to COVID-19.
