In this article, the author discusses barriers admitting Black students to US universities, including the wealth gap, systemic racism, and prohibitions on affirmative action in some states. It details a report by the Education Trust on Black and Latinx enrollment at 101 selective public colleges, which found only 9 percent enroll Black students at rates proportionate to their population within the state. The report makes a number of recommendations, including using race more prominently in admission decisions and rescinding state bans on affirmative action.
